Marketing 101: Transactional Marketing

Transactional Marketing

Some companies like to add transactional marketing or even some of its strategies to their existing marketing plan in order to get more sales. Keep reading to learn more about transactional marketing and to see if it might be a good fit for your company.

What is Transactional Marketing?

Tech Target defines transactional marketing as a “business strategy that focuses on single, point of sale transactions” in hopes to maximize the “efficiency and volume of individual sales, rather than developing a relationship with the buyer.”

According to Khushi Agrawal of Feedough, transactional marketing “targets a large group of individuals to achieve substantial sales.”

It is essentially an alternative to relationship marketing, which focuses on building relationships with customers so they can achieve customer retention. Transactional marketing doesn’t focus on building relationships with customers, which might not seem ideal to most companies, especially ones that value forming relationships with customers. But, it is an inexpensive and easy way to get more sales. And, Khushi Agrawal points out that “most companies essentially practice this technique in their initial stages to capture a large audience.”

So, if you don’t like the idea of not developing relationships with your customers, you can always just take different transactional marketing strategies and incorporate them into your existing marketing plan.

Transactional Marketing Strategies

Khushi Agrawal lists several transactional marketing strategies that companies often use, including:

  • Bundling products or services
  • Upselling
  • Cross-selling
  • Bulk discounts
  • Act now and save coupons or promotions
  • Point-of-sale promotions
