What is a Drip Email Campaign?

Drip Campaigns

Whether you’re trying to woo a new lead, convert a form submitter, or follow up with a phone caller, drip email campaigns can play a big role in your digital marketing strategy by turning leads into loyal customers.

What is a Drip Email?

A drip email campaign, as defined by HubSpot, is a series of emails automatically sent to a specific audience after they take a specific action like signing up for a course, downloading a case study, registering for an event, or filling out an online form. Think of a drip email campaign as a metaphor—like a dripping faucet that gradually fills the sink over time, you are slowly building relationships.

Benefits of a Drip Email Campaign

Because drip emails are customized and targeted to a specific audience and action, they can be extremely effective in getting your product or service fixed in their subconscious. Here are just some of the benefits of a drip email campaign offered up by Business News Daily:

  • Boosts customer engagement
  • Promotes content
  • Nurtures prospective leads
  • Increases brand awareness
  • Recovers disengaged contacts
  • Helps moves customers through the sales pipeline

5 Tips for a Successful Drip Email Campaign

1. Identify your audience.

This is the important first step. Is the audience based on an action taken (i.e. subscribed to your newsletter, downloaded content from your website, etc.)?  A specific demographic (i.e. location, profession, etc.)? Or a certain characteristic (i.e. how often they visit your website, how much they’ve spent on your products or services, etc.)?

2. Set your goals.

To be able to measure the success of your drip email campaign, you need goals. First, determine the number of emails you are going to send out and the frequency between each one. Hubspot recommends no more than five emails every month and sent a few days apart.

3. Craft your message.

Your content for each email should be clear and actionable. According to Mailchimp, your drip campaign emails don’t need to be long, but they definitely need to be consistent with your brand.

4. Include a CTA.

Your audience should know what to do at the end of your email message. Always include a clear Call-to-Action (CTA) with every email. It could be to sign up for a free trial, shop a catalog for products or services, request a quote, etc.

5. Evaluate the results.

Take a look at your bounce rate, click-through rate, conversions, unsubscribes, and the amount of time a user spent on your site to get a feel for an email’s performance and make adjustments to future emails based on those factors.
